For Immediate Release:
Los Angeles, CA – January 15, 2024 – The Latino Entertainment Journalists Association (LEJA) announced the nominees for its 6th annual Latino Entertainment Film Awards.
Leading the 2024 nominations is Warner Bros.’ groundbreaking comedy “Barbie” with 15 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director for Greta Gerwig, and two nominations in the Supporting Acting categories for America Ferrara and Ryan Gosling. Universal Pictures’ WWII biopic “Oppenheimer” follows with 15 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and acting category nominations for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey, Jr., and Emily Blunt.
Searchlight Pictures’ “Poor Things” and Apple Original Films’ “Killers of the Flower Moon” picked up 13 and 10 nominations, while the fifth most nominated film was Netflix’s “Society of the Snow,” Spain’s official submission to the Academy Awards, with eight nods.
Other Best Picture nominees for this year’s LEJA Entertainment Film Awards include “All of Us Strangers” (Fox Searchlight), “The Holdovers” (Focus Features), “Origin” (NEON), “Past Lives” (A24), and “Radical” (Pantelion Films).
Along with nominations for the 23 competitive categories listed below, LEJA has also honored Mexican actor, comedian, producer, and screenwriter Eugenio Derbez as the recipient of this year’s Rita Moreno Lifetime Achievement Award.
Derbez was born in Mexico City in 1961 and started acting in Mexican telenovelas as a teenager. He has been a renowned comedian in Latin America since his participation in Mexican TV comedy series “Cachun, Cahun, Ra, Ra!” and “Anabel” in the 1980s. In 2013, Derbez starred in and directed “Instructions Not Included,” one of the most successful Spanish-language films in the U.S. and worldwide. In 2021, he starred as a beloved musical teacher in Best Picture Oscar winner “Coda.” In 2023, he produced and starred in LEJA Best Picture nominee “Radical.”
This award recognizes a Latino talent for outstanding contributions in the film industry. Past winners include Rita Moreno (2019); Jennifer Lopez (2020); Rosie Perez (2021); John Leguizamo (2022); and Guillermo del Toro (2023).
